Engagement & Espionage - Blog Tour!

BANNER_EE_BT

Engagement and Espionage, an all-new quirky and swoon-worthy romantic comedy featuring fan favorites Jenn and Cletus Winston from New York Times bestselling author Penny Reid is available now!

Engagement_and_espionage_cover_04-1_ebook_color2-1_2560x1707

Jennifer Sylvester made her deal with the devil . . . and now they’re engaged!

But all is not well in Green Valley. A chicken choker is on the loose, 61 dead birds most "fowl" need plucking, and no time remains for Jennifer and her devilish fiancĂ©. Desperate to find a spare moment together, Jenn and Cletus’s attempts to reconnect are thwarted by one seemingly coincidental disaster after another. It’s not long before Cletus and Jenn see a pattern emerge and the truth becomes clear.

Sabotage!

Will an undercover mission unmask the culprit? Or are these love-birds totally plucked?

'Engagement and Espionage' is the first book in the Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries series, is a full-length cozy mystery, and is a spin-off of Penny Reid's Winston Brothers series. This novel is best read after 'Beard Science,' Winston Brothers #3.

MY REVIEW:

☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ Five Stars for Cletus ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Engagement and Espionage by Penny Reid is the first book in a new series spinoff from the amazingly and deservedly popular Winston Brothers books. This series is a bit of a change from the original Winston stories, as this is a Cozy Mystery. Also – I have to say it - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you read Beard Science (Winston Brothers #3) before you read this book. You don’t have to, of course, but you will thank me later. If you haven’t read Beard Science, you’re seriously missing out anyway, because...Cletus. Back to my point, this book picks up the threads of time (and characters) shortly after the events of Beard Science, and I want you to receive maximum enjoyment from this cozy, sexy, snarky mischievous, mysteriously clever book.

Before I go any farther, I have to get this out…OH HOW I’VE MISSED CLETUS WINSTON!! I didn’t think I could love him any more, but as usual, Penny has shown me the way. Thank Science for Cletus.

Engagement and Espionage is a well-plotted mystery with excellent pacing and a sneaky keen eye for detail. Since there IS mystery here, I’m being extra careful not to give anything away with my review! Suffice to say that there are plenty of twists and turns on this wild, witty, somewhat hilarious, truly enjoyable ride. The mystery aspect of this book was woven so flawlessly into the romance between Cletus and Jenn – the action, puzzles and hilarious dialogue kept the pages turning!

You’re hooked into this story from the first page, falling right back into the relationships between Cletus and Jenn, Jenn and her mother, the Winston clan...heck, the whole of Green Valley! The small town aspect plays such a great part in all of the books set in the Pennyverse – each of those million little connections working to tie together the threads of the story (and of all those stories yet to come!).

One of my favorite things about the Winstons & their loves is how truly real they are. You’re not looking at an airbrushed, cookie-cutter group of heroes/heroines in Green Valley. The residents are varied, devious, colorful, and deep - and I love them for it. Cletus and Jenn are smart, sneaky, and oh-so-much fun. I was fully invested in seeing Cletus and Jenn work through some of their internal and interpersonal barriers and come through it all with so much love and strength. This book gives us a chance to view their personalities and their relationship from a bit of a different angle while they deal with the current state of mystery and intrigue in town. I can’t wait to see what shenanigans await then in the next installment!

Excerpt:

“Don’t stop.” She reached for my belt again, this time completely undoing it, the button of my pants, and my zipper at world-record speed. Her phone buzzed. Then it chimed. Then it buzzed and chimed two more times. Then it rang again. Reba. Cursing, Jenn pulled the phone from her pocket, once again her face illuminated, murderous rage in her eyes. Her finger moved to the power off button. She blinked, hesitating. Her eyes widened, her body stiffened, and she gasped. “Cletus!” Something about her tone, like she was horrified, and maybe a little afraid, cut through the heavy haze of lust inertia, and my hands stilled. Shaking myself, it took me a few moments to realize she was showing me the phone screen, and another few to bring the content of the text messages into focus. Momma: Jennifer Anne Sylvester, pick up your phone. If you’re with Cletus, I need his help. Please. Momma: ALL THE CHICKENS AND ROOSTERS ARE DEAD! PICK UP YOUR DAMN PHONE! Momma: I’m calling you in a second, pick up the phone. Mr. Badcock’s chickens are dead. All of them. I got here and he’s running around, deranged, yelling about his dead chickens! I called the police and they’re on their way. Please, please, please pick up the phone! At some point, I must’ve taken the phone from Jenn and stepped away, because I glanced up upon reading the messages for the third time, finding the phone in my hand and Jenn fixing her skirt. “This is nuts.” Her big eyes searched mine imploringly. “Who could have done this?” I shook my head, having not yet managed to fully shift head gears—you know, from that head to the one on my neck—and my gaze dropped to the wet patch on the front of her dress just visible in the swath of light. My erection throbbed. So we’re . . . not having sex? “Why? Why would they do it? And WHO?” She snatched her phone back, her tone bewildered, distracted, and distraught. She was distraught because of the dead chickens, like any normal person would be. I was distraught also, but my distress had nothing to do with farm animals. “We have to go.” Jenn grabbed my hand and began walking toward the direction of the hall. Meanwhile, it took me until her hand found the door handle to realize my zipper and belt were still undone. “This is crazy.” She paused as I zipped up, her tone halting and distracted. “Poor Mr. Badcock. And those poor chickens.” A sound of distress escaped her throat. “This is terrible.” It was terrible. And I was going to hell. Because all I could think was, Talk about a cock block.

Time for Tea Designs - July Release Sneak Peek

Good morning friends! Today I'm sharing a fun SNEAK PEEK from Time For Tea Designs!

From our upcoming July release - All Occasions Critters and coordinating dies!

Today's sweet baby scene was built around a night sky theme. I layered on Distress Oxide Inks in Black Soot, Chipped Sapphire, and Tumbled Glass, which I applied using large sized Beautiful Blender Brushes. Once the ombre background was completely dry, I stamped the star in a random pattern using the Tsukineko Embossing ink pad and heat embossed them with Sparkling Snow EP from Wow!. I used the coordinating dies to cut out the moon, bear, and sentiment after I had stamped them in Memento Tuxedo Black ink and colored with Copic markers. Most layers are popped up on 3D foam pads, which I used for absolutely EVERYTHING I make!

The cloud die is from Lawn Fawn, the embossing folder is from Cuttlebug and the sequins are from Doodlebug. Bear was colored with Copic markers.

I'm IN LOVE with every product from this new  release - so cute!! Don't forget to use my coupon code if you go shopping - T4TJENNIFER10 will save you 10% on your order from the Time For Tea shop! Yayyyy :)

Star Bright by Staci Hart

✨ Star Bright is Almost HERE! ✨

The party of the century starts AT MIDNIGHT TONIGHT!

This group of friends and all the laughs and love they inspire. Get ready for the thrill of a lifetime. Pick up Star Bright TODAY! Trust me--you won't regret it.

-----------

Stella Spencer has one enemy—her secrets.
The world’s obsession with the Bright Young Things is real. Every lavish party thrown by the most exclusive group in New York is a spectacle, stalked not only by the media, but by the police commissioner, who’s declared war. He’s out to ruin everyone’s good time, starting with uncovering the mysterious benefactor leading the group, thus answering the question on everyone’s lips.
Who is Cecelia Beaton?
And no one knows it’s Stella.
If society finds out the truth, her plans will unravel. And with one smoldering look from a stranger, her carefully ordered world catches fire.
Levi Hunt has one plan—get the story.
His future at Vagabond magazine depends on his ability to do the one thing no one can: infiltrate the Bright Young Things. If he can find out who Cecelia Beaton is, he’ll earn enough notoriety to permanently secure his career.
His dreams are at his fingertips, so long as he doesn’t blow his cover. But one night with the brightest, most brilliant young thing of all, and he knows he’ll have to make a choice.
The job he loves or the woman of his dreams.
Secrets and lies. Love and laughter. And two people with something to hide and everything to gain.

Welcome to the party.

My review:

☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ 5 Brightly Shining Stars ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Oh my WORD! ☆ ☆ Staci Hart is a brilliant storyteller – the more of her work that I read, the more I want! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I started reading Star Bright – high society glamour and drama with a dash of lush romance, perhaps? The teasers had me on the hook refreshing my Kindle waiting for this one to be delivered as I just knew it would be a unique and exciting telling - fresh, and flawless. By page 2, I was swept away to NYC on the wings of Ms. Hart’s powerfully evocative writing.

As we enter our first party, you can FEEL the emotion and the atmosphere of the party come right off the page. I adore our heroine Stella – she’s got a lovely, fierce, and caring heart; I would love to know her! Levi is the yin to her yang, with charm to spare and a secret that could endanger the both the tribe she’s collected and the world that she’s built for them all. Cue the larger-than-life BYTs, costumes for days, glitz, gossip, conflict, and lust, combine it all with minstrel-like magic, and you’ve got an unputdownable winner. I always love a good romance, but the best thing about this book was the STORY; the energy of the characters, the slow burn of true chemistry, and how the reality of our times (secrets, social media, society) shapes it all.

Star Bright is a gorgeous story that will speak to your soul. If you’re looking for frivolity and superficiality – look elsewhere! Staci Hart has SUCH a way with words, and an amazing attention to detail that brings her stories instantly to life. The combination of heat and charm, dazzle and depth brings Stella, Levi, and all the rest of the BYT to truly glorious living color. [side note - I NEED Z’s book]. The struggles of each character, with their believable self-awareness and complex mindset brings us the richness of content that I’ve come to expect when being swept up in a Staci Hart novel. Nothing in this book feels contrived – even the angst and conflict come about just as they should. What a perfect read to lose yourself in.

Until that next glimpse of foiled letters sprinkled across rich, heavyweight cardstock comes your way...remember that life is for living. I think we could all benefit from having a little Cecelia Beaton in our lives!

My general rating rationale:

3 – Perfectly fine story, perhaps some minor editorial errors. Entertaining. Typically with this rating I feel like there could have been MORE – be it believably/relatability, character development, internal dialogue, explanations or depth, richness to the overall storyline, etc. May lose a bit of engagement here and there but always finish reading.
4 – A very good book. Engaging, with well-developed characters, a great plot, relatable scenarios; keeps you invested to the last page. Would recommend to reader friends.
5 – Can’t say enough amazing things, loved the characters, fabulously detailed plot, a quick hook, intense investment in both story and characters (including supporting characters) throughout the book. Will tell anyone who will listen that they should read it.

Costas Sisters Re-Release by Carly Phillips

My Review: Mystery & Romance

Under the Boardwalk is the first book in the Costas sisters series from Carly Phillips – though each book is easily read as a standalone and there are no cliffhangers. I read both stories, and I think there was a nice depth to the series as the characters (including all of the secondary characters) continue to grow. The book I read & am reviewing is a re-release of the original, and includes a new cover. I have not read the original release.

All Ariana Costas ever wanted was a “normal” life. She left her quirky, crazy Greek family and their south Jersey Boardwalk show antics and cons behind as soon as she was able, reinventing herself in Vermont while teaching Psychology. She returns home five years later, after receiving the news that her twin sister Zoe is missing. Ari goes on the hunt for her sister, determined to find the truth. Quinn is an undercover cop on assignment at the casino that Zoe disappeared from. After a run-in with Ari, he thinks he’s sent her packing back to Vermont to wait for news – little does he know!

Home really is the best place sometimes! Zoe’s disappearance forces Ari to confront her past, her insecurities, and evaluate what & who she really wants in her life. This book was an easy and fun read, and has a bit of everything – mystery & intrigue, drama, self-realization, romance, suspense, and humor. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

---

My Review: A Fun Read As Always

Summer of Love is the second book in the Costas sisters series from Carly Phillips – though each book is easily read as a standalone. I read them in order, and I think there was a nice depth to the series as the characters (including all of the secondary characters) continue to grow. This book is a re-release of the original, with a new cover and re-imagined title. The original book was called Summer Lovin’.

Zoe Costas is a security specialist and former government agent with a wild spirit, thanks in part to her zany and crazy family and their tourist sideshow antics. Ryan Baldwin is an old-money Boston attorney who couldn’t be more “by the book”. In a true case of opposites attract, the sparks fly between Zoe and Ryan from their first encounter. I love their chemistry!

It’s never all fun and games – nor should it be. ;) This is an entertaining and enjoying read with a surprising amount of complexity in emotions and family dynamics. We get a taste of suspense, mystery, drama, and romantic sizzle, all wrapped up in Zoe and Ryan.

I’ve always enjoy Ms. Phillips’ books. This one is no exception, and this series holds a special place in my heart as it’s set in a beach town in south Jersey, where I have spent a significant amount of time. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

---

My general rating rationale:
5 – Can’t say enough amazing things, loved the characters, fabulously detailed plot, a quick hook, intense investment in both story and characters (including secondary characters) throughout the book. Will tell anyone who will listen that they should read it.
4 – A very good book. Engaging, with well-developed characters, a great plot, relatable scenarios; keeps you invested to the last page. Would recommend to reader friends.
3 – Perfectly fine story, perhaps some minor editorial errors. Entertaining. Typically with this rating I feel like there could have been MORE – be it believably/relatability, character development, internal dialogue, explanations or depth, richness to the overall story line, etc. May lose a bit of engagement here and there but I always finish reading it.
